A thorough working knowledge of the different functionalities of WordPress is a boon for web architects of today. Comments are activated by default in WordPress, right from individual pages, posts to images and landing pages. This might not be desirable in all cases, like, for instance, if you have static web pages without a blog section. And even active bloggers might not like comments since they distract the attention of readers from the mainstream content. You might want to go in for selective or global removal of those comments.
Removing Comments from Entire Network
The disable comments plug-in comes handy for WordPress administrators to disable comments on WordPress pages, posts or attachments. By removing all comment-related fields, it aids in disabling comments on a global basis, even including multisite installations. Upon downloading the plug-in, navigate to the tab under settings and check the disable comments feature. There are a few options here. On clicking the everywhere option, all comment related controls and settings get disabled. The next option is on certain post types like pages, media, and services. There is another option to activate the persistent mode. This must be activated only when you want to disable comments permanently, even after the plug-in is removed. The plug-in is useful in removing existing comments, the comment form and also the 'comments are closed'message in old posts. However, this method enables total doing away with comments and does not come of use if you want to do a selective removal on individual posts.
Specific Removal of Comments on WordPress Posts or Pages
It is possible to remove the comment box on existing Wordpress posts or pages and also on those posts that you are about to publish. The following simple steps are required to do a selective removal of comments:

You can find the checkbox 'allow people to post a comment on new articles' under default article settings in the discussions tab. However, these settings can be overridden for individual articles as per your preferences. There is also another feature to automatically close comments on articles by pre-defining specified time in terms of days.

Many comments are not genuine and may only be for spam and self-promotion purposes. Not every netizen is well-versed in commenting etiquettes. This annoys content developers and publishers. There is some user-friendly plug-in like Akismet, WordPress.Zero spam to filter spam comments from the genuine ones.
